The SLO County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) is excited to announce the winners of the 2010 Pollution Prevention School Challenge. The 2010 School Challenge was aimed at spotlighting school programs that reduced pollution and challenged youth to think of ways they can reduce air pollution at their school or classroom.
Join us on December 1 at 9:00 a.m. in the SLO County Board of Supervisors Chambers as we award the three schools for their work to reduce air pollution. The schools will give short presentations and the kindergarten class will be singing their “Pollution Solution” song. The three awards that were issued include:
Most Inspirational Award
Trinity Lutheran School, Paso Robles:Mrs. Fairbanks and Ms. Mockler’s Kindergarten class created a book filled with illustrations designed by students showing how air pollution affects your health and ways to reduce the impacts. In addition to the book, the class also produced a video of their Pollution Solution song. Check out Trinity's Pollution Solution Video.
Community Involvement Award
Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo:The “Green Team” developed a transportation challenge program titled “However You Go, Keep Your Carbon Low” designed to engage their school community to think about the environmental effects of transportation. The challenge features point levels for each alternative mode of transportation and all grade levels compete to get the most points.
Sustainable Business Award
Liberty High School, Paso Robles: The “Green Works Club” at Liberty High School developed a sustainable business plan called “Soy D’Light.” The main premise of their plan is to manufacture clean burning soy wax candles and sell them to individuals throughout the community to improve air quality impacts.
The winning classes/clubs will be recognized in the local media, participate in an award ceremony at the December 1 APCD Board Meeting (streamed live and archived on the County web site), and receive a free pizza and ice cream party!
Be sure to check out all of the winners’ great displays at the SLO County Government Center from November 15 through December 6!
