Earth Day 2010

On April 22, 2010 the Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition (C5) will host a green car show at Farmers' Market in downtown San Luis Obispo. This will be a great opportunity to see the latest in alternative fuel vehicle technology. The car show will be on Broad Street between Higuera and Monterey. Stop by and check out the vehicles.

On April 24, 2010 the APCD will be participating in the Earth Day celebration at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo. A variety of information will be available on ways to reduces air pollution.

Bike Month

May is bike month. Stay tuned for more information on the many fun events that will be taking place during bike month.

Expert Panel to Discuss Particulate Matter and Your Health

On Tuesday, September 15, the APCD hosted an informational brown bag lunch to increase awareness and answer questions about the health impacts of airborne particulate matter (PM).

PM is extremely small airborne particles that, when inhaled, can lodge deep in the lungs and cause serious health problems including increased respiratory distress, decreased lung function, aggravated asthma, development of chronic bronchitis, irregular heartbeat, heart attacks, and premature death in people with heart or lung disease. Major sources of PM in the county include smoke, dust and diesel-burning equipment.

The lunch-time meeting featured a panel of state and local experts who described the sources of particulate matter, how it is measured and how you can protect you and your family from the health effects of particulate matter. Panelists included:

  • Dr. Melanie Marty, Chief of the Air Toxicology and Epidemiology Branch in Cal EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment
  • Dr. Tracy Thatcher, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo
  • Larry Allen, Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District

Commute for Cash Challenge
Rideshare Month 2009

In October, APCD, Rideshare and partner organizations challenged San Luis Obispo County residences to re-think their commute with the Commute for Cash Challenge during Rideshare Month. Residences were encouraged to try an alternative modes of transportation to see just how easy and cost effective it is to leave the car at home.

Food Miles

A "Food Miles" event was held at the Farmers' Market in San Luis Obispo on Thursday June 25. "Food Miles" promotes buying locally grown foods that not only helps support local farmers but also cuts down on greenhouse gases.

WaterFest 2009

WaterFest 2009 was celebrated on June 20, 2009 in Morro Bay. WaterFest was a combined efforts of nearly a dozen different nonprofit groups and agencies. This year’s event was held in conjunction with Surfrider’s International Surfing Day.

Grant Workshop

The APCD hosted a Grant Workshop on May 14, 2009 at the San Luis Obispo Vets Hall in San Luis Obispo. An overview of the State Regulations and Local Issues impacting Ag engines, off-road eqiupment and on-road trucks was discussed along with information on grant funding opportunities.

Family Day at the Wildlife Refuge

On Saturday, April 25, 2009 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center co-hosted a "Refuge Family Day" on the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge. This event was part of the ongoing "Connecting Families with Nature Program".

The event featured about display stations intermittently located along a quater-mile long hiking trail on the Refuge in the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes.

Earth Day

Earth Day was celebrated Saturday April 18, 2009 in the Mission Plaza in San Luis Obsipo.

Focus the Nation

For the second year, APCD participated in Cal Poly's Focus the Nation event. This event is a week long teach-in geared to generate discussion among students, faculty and the community on actions needed to address global climate change.This forum was held on the Cal Poly campus February 5, 2009.  

Renewable Energy Education Forum

SEA Change (the Strategic Energy Alliance) held a renewable energy education forum Feb. 6 from 9am-1:30 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Veteran's Hall at 801 Grand Avenue, San Luis Obispo.
