State Standard Attainment for Ozone
In 1989, San Luis Obispo
County was designated as nonattainment with the state health based
standard for ozone. Ozone forming pollutants throughout San Luis Obispo
County have been significantly reduced since that time. For the years 2000 through 2002, no violations of the State
hourly ozone standard (0.09 ppm) were measured at any of the six
community-based monitoring stations in SLO County. Based upon that record, the State Air Resources Board re-designated
our County as attainment with the state health based ozone standard in
January 2004.
On April 28, 2005, the California Air Resources Board (ARB)
approved the nation's most health protective ozone standard with
special consideration for children's health. The new 8-hour-average
standard at 0.070 ppm will further protect California's most
vulnerable population from the adverse health effects associated
with ground-level ozone.
Based on monitoring data San Luis Obispo County has once again
been deemed nonattainment for the new ozone standard.
