* FORECAST DISCUSSION

5/16/2012: Better Breathers Alert. Air quality is unhealthy for very sensitive persons due to an increase in ozone concentrations. Ozone concentrations are forecasted to increase significantly in the afternoon and evening hours in the eastern valleys and mountains of San Luis Obispo County; impacting Carrizo Plains, Red Hills and nearby communities. People that are sensitive to air pollution should limit time outside during the afternoon and evening. During periods of increased ozone concentrations, health impacts of ozone air pollution can be minimized by reducing strenuous activities and staying indoors. San Luis Obispo County residents are encouraged to reduce emission causing activities by limiting vehicle use and the use of products that contribute to the formation of ozone.

5/17/2012, 5/18/2012 and 5/21/2012- Better Breathers Alert. Air quality is unhealthy for very sensitive persons due to blowing dust and sand. Blowing sand and dust is possible in the Oceano Dunes/Nipomo Mesa area on 5/17/2012, 5/18/2012 and 5/21/2012 due to strong northwest winds. An increase in PM10 is forecasted to occur from noon to 7 pm, with the dust peaking from 1 pm to 5 pm. Reschedule outdoor activities to occur when there is no visible dust. Very sensitive individuals such as infants, as well as children and adults with existing respiratory or heart conditions may experience adverse health effects during blowing dust periods. If blowing dust and sand is visible in the air, County officials recommend all adults and children avoid strenuous outdoor activity, remain indoors as much as possible, and set any heating/air conditioning/ventilation systems to recirculation. The public is advised to consult your doctor if you are experiencing health problems in an area with blowing dust and sand. If staying indoors does not provide relief, temporarily leaving the area and going to a location where the sand is not blowing and dust is not visible is advised.

5/16/2012, 5/19/2012 & 5/20/2012: Blowing Dust May Impact Oceano Dunes/Nipomo Mesa area: Some blowing dust may occur due to northwesterly winds; however, the AQI is forecasted to remain in the good category. Extremely sensitive individuals with existing respiratory or heart conditions may experience adverse health effects and may need to take appropriate precautions. The general public likely will not experience symptoms.
